ECO Window Systems Window Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Window replacement for ECO Window Systems units in Austin typically runs $650 to $1,400 per window installed, depending on glass package, frame condition, and whether the sash or the full frame needs to go. We stock ECO Window Systems-compatible sashes, balances, and glass units on our trucks, and in most cases we can swap a failed unit the same week we come out to measure. Most Austin homeowners figure out something’s wrong the hard way: a window that won’t stay open, glass that’s fogged between the panes by late summer, or a frame that’s started letting dust from the Greenbelt settle on the sill every afternoon. Owen Satterfield has seen every version of this failure across Austin, from older bungalows in Travis Heights to newer builds out toward Circle C, and the fix usually comes down to matching the right replacement to the exact ECO series you already have.
We’re an independent Austin contractor, not a factory-owned ECO Window Systems shop. That matters because we’re not tied to one supply line. If your ECO window needs a genuine OEM part, we get it. If a quality aftermarket equivalent does the same job at a better price, we tell you that too, with the part number written on the estimate.
Which ECO Window Systems Models This Applies To
ECO Window Systems has run several product lines through Austin homes over the years, including the ECO 3000, ECO 5000, and the newer ECO Premier series. The fastest way to identify what you have is to look for a silver sticker on the inside of the frame, usually on the head or the side jamb above the lock. It will list a series number and sometimes a manufacturing date. If the sticker’s peeled off, which happens a lot in Austin’s humidity, measure the visible glass width and height, then measure the frame depth. ECO 3000 frames run thinner than the Premier line, and a sash from one will not seat properly in the other.
The compatibility gotcha we see most often: ECO 5000 and Premier series use a different balance shoe design than the 3000. The balances are the spring-loaded mechanisms inside the side channels that hold the window up when you raise it. A 3000 balance will physically fit a 5000 channel about half the time, but the tension rating is different, so the window will either slam shut or slowly creep down. If you can’t find the sticker, take a photo of the balance shoe at the bottom of the sash and send it to us. It takes thirty seconds and saves a wrong-part service call. For glass, ECO used low-e coatings (a thin coating that reflects heat back into the room in winter and out in summer) on most Austin-bound units, and the coating variance depends on the year. Older ECO glass from before 2015 tends to have a lighter low-e tint than current production, which matters if you’re replacing one pane in a double-hung and want the color to match year-to-year.
Signs Your ECO Window Systems Window Replacement Is Failing
- Fog or haze between the panes. The seal around the insulated glass unit (IGU) has lost its bond. Once the desiccant inside the spacer bar is saturated, you get permanent condensation you can’t wipe off. This is the single most common ECO failure we see in Austin, thanks to the heat-and-humidity cycle pulling on the seal every summer.
- The sash drops when you raise it. Your balances have lost tension or the balance shoe has cracked. It’s not a lubrication problem, and spraying the tracks with silicone won’t fix it. It’s a parts replacement, full stop.
- The window is hard to open or won’t stay locked. A warped frame or a worn pivot bar will cause the sash to bind. The slam-lock on ECO Premier models is nice when it works, but when the pawl wears, the window won’t stay secure, which matters a lot on a first-floor Austin window at street level.
- You can feel outside air around the frame, even when closed. The weatherstripping or the frame itself has compressed. On west-facing Austin exposures, we see the vinyl channel deform faster from afternoon sun. It’s subtle, but on a windy spring day you’ll feel it.
- You’re hearing more road noise than you used to. ECO windows are built as a system, and when the gas fill escapes and the seal goes, or the frame flexes out of square, the sound deadening goes with it. If you live near MoPac, you’ll notice the difference quickly.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s how ECO window replacement prices land in Austin, installed:
- Sash-only replacement (glass and vinyl sash, same frame): $650 to $950 per window. This covers a failed IGU when the frame itself is still square and sound.
- Balance and pivot repair (window won’t stay up): $180 to $320 per window. Includes new shoes, balances, and pivot bars matched to your ECO series.
- Full-frame replacement (frame warped, leaking, or damaged): $1,000 to $1,400 per window, including new low-e glass and interior/exterior trim where needed.
- Multiple-window replacement (5+ windows): $600 to $900 per window averaged, since one trip and one setup covers the labor.
Every estimate we write is a line-item price handed to you before any work starts. We don’t come back at the end of the job with a revised invoice. The Kingswell Guarantee backs it: the price is in writing, we show up in the window we gave you, and we leave the job site cleaner than we found it. If a repair we do fails within the guarantee period, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s not a maybe-warranty, it’s a written one, and you’ll have a copy in hand at completion.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things an Austin homeowner can safely do before calling: identify the series number on the frame sticker, and take a photo of the balance shoe or the fogged glass so we can quote accurately before we even roll a truck. What I wouldn’t do is attempt to replace the balances yourself. The balance systems in ECO windows are under spring tension, and getting the shoe out without the right extraction tool can send a metal part into your hand or crack the vinyl channel. It’s not a scare story, it’s just what happens when you work tensioned hardware without the right tool. The same goes for lifting out a sash with broken glass; tempered glass can shatter into small sharp cubes with very little provocation.
If it’s a sash swap and you’ve got the model identified, we can usually have it done in under an hour per window once the part is in hand. If you’re not sure what’s failed, that’s what the free estimate is for. Call (254) 322-3468 and tell us what the window’s doing. Somebody will pick up, and we’ll get you scheduled for a measurement. Measure it right the first time and the rest of the job takes care of itself.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, we typically see ECO window seals last 12 to 18 years before fog or loss of gas fill, with frames running another 10 years past that if the home stays dry and the window wasn’t installed against an out-of-square opening. The south and west exposures always go first. Call (254) 322-3468 if you’re seeing early fog; sometimes it’s a single-unit issue and the rest of the windows are fine.
No. Once the IGU seal fails and moisture gets between the panes, the right fix is a new glass unit. There are companies that drill, vent, and reseal, but it’s a temporary patch that leaves the glass weaker and the view cloudy. We’d rather quote you the honest replacement. Estimates are free, so you’ll know the cost before you decide.
A sash-only swap takes 45 minutes to an hour per window once the part is on hand. A full-frame replacement runs two to four hours depending on what the rough opening looks like behind the old frame, and we don’t rush that part. The measurement visit itself is free and takes about 20 minutes. Call (254) 322-3468 and we’ll book the visit.
We stock the common ECO 3000 and 5000 balances, shoes, pivot bars, and locking hardware on our trucks, and our Austin supplier keeps newer Premier-series sashes and glass units in local inventory. If you have an older ECO model or a non-standard size, we’ll order OEM or equivalent and have it within a week in most cases. We also carry parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS windows if you have a mixed house. Call (254) 322-3468 with your series number and we’ll tell you what’s available same-week.
