Mr-Glass Window Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Mr-Glass window replacement in Austin typically runs $340 to $780 per window installed, depending on glass package, frame condition, and whether we’re swapping the sash or the whole unit. We stock Mr-Glass-compatible insulated glass units and field-replacement sashes, so most jobs are done within two to three business days once we measure the opening. The way most Austin homeowners discover they need this work is straightforward: a room gets hotter in July, condensation shows up between the panes, or the sash that slid easily for a decade suddenly needs two hands and a shove.
We’re an independent Kingswell location and one of the few shops in the Austin area that actively stocks replacement components for all eight of our manufacturer lines, Mr-Glass included. Owen Satterfield and our crew have been measuring and installing these units across Austin since 2009, and the pattern is consistent: the glass usually outlasts the seals, and the seals usually fail first on west-facing walls.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass builds two product families that dominate the replacement market in Austin: their 6800 Series vinyl horizontal sliders and the 7200 Series single-hung and double-hung windows. The 6800 Series is common in production homes built between roughly 2008 and 2020, while the 7200 Series shows up in both renovation work and newer construction. Before you order anything, check the label on the top edge of the sash or the spacer bar between the glass panes. It will carry an alphanumeric code that tells us the series, glass dimensions, and low-e coating type.
The compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: a 6800 sash will not interchange with a 7200 frame, even when both measure 36 by 48 inches. The glazing beads, the weatherstripping channels, and the cam locks are all different. We match by measuring the visible glass, then verifying against the frame embossment, because Mr-Glass changed frame extrusion profiles in 2016 and that change catches people who assume a “standard 3-0 by 4-0” all fits alike. For glass-only replacements, we specify an OEM-equivalent insulated unit with the same low-e coating and argon or krypton fill as the original. Aftermarket glass from an unknown supplier is cheaper, but we’ve pulled units in North Austin where the aftermarket glass came with a five-year seal warranty and failed in year six, on a window that faces the afternoon sun.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Replacement Is Failing
- Fog or condensation between the panes. This means the perimeter seal has released and moist Austin air is cycling through the airspace. Cleaning the outside of the glass won’t help; the only fix is replacing the insulated glass unit. The west elevation of a house in Circle C sees seal failure two to four years sooner than the north side, purely from thermal expansion stress.
- Draft you can feel near the frame on a cold morning. The weatherstripping on Mr-Glass series windows is a composite pile strip that compresses over time. Once that strip flattens out, the sash loses its compression seal and winter air finds a path in around the meeting rail.
- The sash drops when you tilt it in for cleaning. That’s a failed pivot spring on the balance assembly. It’s a wear item on all hung windows, but the Austin dust and pollen load tends to accelerate it, especially in houses near the Greenbelt with trees within thirty feet of the glass.
- Visible condensation streaks on the interior glass in summer. Not between the panes, but on the room side. Often the low-e coating is degrading, usually due to a compromised desiccant system in the spacer. The window still works, but its thermal performance is dropping.
- The crank or lock doesn’t engage. On Mr-Glass 7200 Series units with a cam-action locking sweep, worn hardware prevents the sash from sitting tight against the weatherstripping, which then accelerates all the other problems above.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Mr-Glass window replacement costs in Austin, installed:
- Insulated glass unit replacement (single window): $340 to $510 installed, depending on glass area and coating package.
- Full sash replacement (6800 Series slider): $410 to $620, which includes a new sash, new weatherstripping, and hardware alignment.
- Full window replacement (7200 or 6800, standard size): $580 to $780, frame and all, labor, flashing, and interior trim re-set where needed.
- Right-hand door lites and transoms from the Mr-Glass D-40 line: $290 to $450, priced by panel area and glass thickness.
Every price above includes the part, the labor, the sealant, and a written invoice that matches the written estimate you got before we started. That’s The Kingswell Way: we give you the price in writing before any work begins, and that’s the price you pay. If a repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge. Call us at (254) 322-3468 and we’ll get you an exact number for your window.
DIY or Call Us?
Because we are a Mr-Glass dealer and replacement specialist, we’ll be straight with you about this. There is no safe DIY path to reglazing an insulated unit at home. The glass, spacer, and desiccant are sealed under controlled vacuum or gas fill; that seal cannot be recreated with a tube of caulk in a driveway. Replacing a sash is safer than fooling with the glass itself, but there’s a reason our techs carry a second set of hands for 6800 sliders: the sashes are vinyl with sealed glazing beads that crack when pried wrong, and a wrong pry on an installed frame can snap the sill track. What you can safely do is check the label, measure the visible glass to the nearest 1/16 inch, take a photo of the lock and the corner joint of the frame, and send it to us. We’ll identify the exact Mr-Glass series and give you a real price before anyone rings the doorbell.
FAQs
Most Mr-Glass insulated units in Central Texas last 14 to 20 years before the seal or hardware needs attention; west-facing windows in full afternoon sun trend toward the shorter end. Proper installation matters more than the brand, and daily thermal cycling is the real stressor. Call (254) 322-3468 if you’re seeing early fog.
No. Mr-Glass insulated glass units are sealed factory assemblies; once the seal fails, the unit loses its insulator gas and the only correct fix is a matched replacement unit. Patching a crack with resin is not viable for these windows. We stock the common Mr-Glass glass sizes on our trucks.
Most single-window swaps take one technician two to three hours on site, including cleanup and a final walkthrough, and we leave the site cleaner than we found it. A whole-house sash replacement is a one-day job for most three- and four-bedroom houses in Austin.
We stock the 6800 and 7200 Series sash assemblies and common insulated glass sizes, plus the matching weatherstripping and hardware for both series; less common sizes and D-40 door lites take two to three business days to pull from the Mr-Glass regional distribution in Dallas. Call (254) 322-3468 and we’ll tell you what’s on the truck that day.
